Infrastructure - Mexico - Volcanic ash ground flights at Mexico City airport

Three airline operators have restricted flights into the Mexico City international airport, AICM, as the Popocat?petl volcano, located 70km southeast of the capital, continues to spew increasing amounts of ash, according to a tweet from the national transport and communications ministry, SCT.

"There is no volcanic ash at the airport, however, due to the volcanic activity, Alaska Airlines and Delta have limited their operations," stated the tweet, published at around 10am local time.

A few moments later, the SCT tweeted that American Airlines had followed suit in limiting operations in the airport.

The volcanic alert system is currently at "yellow, phase two", just one step away from the highest level of danger that would require evacuation of the area, according to information from the national disaster prevention center, Cenapred.

On the afternoon of July 3 the volcano started "an episode of high-frequency tremors...which has continued until now," said Cenapred in a release.

The volcano is emitting ash and vapor as well as incandescent fragments on the northern and eastern slopes.

During July 3, the plume of ash headed west/northwest towards the State of Mexico but it has now changed direction towards the north, away from the capital.

A security cordon has been installed with a 12km radius around the volcano and traffic is being controlled in the area, said Cenapred.
