Bad 'Fresh Prince' rap triggers Pa. lockdown

(AP) ? Now this is a story all about how a high school student's life got turned upside down. But it was all just a bad rap.

The teen's voicemail greeting triggered a lockdown at his Pennsylvania school after a receptionist misheard his rendition of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" theme song.

While trying to confirm an appointment with 19-year-old Travis Clawson the receptionist thought the message said "shooting people outside of the school." The line is actually "shooting some b-ball," a reference to basketball.

The receptionist called 911 and Economy police arrested Clawson a short time later at Ambridge Area High School, but released him once he explained the message.

Acting police Chief James Mann says police acted "appropriately" out of concern for students' welfare.

Clawson's family has contacted an attorney.

On-Sale Date: May 2013

Base Price: $52,000 to $95,000 (est.)

Competitors: Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Lexus GS, Infiniti M

Powertrains: 2.1-liter I-4, 190 hp, 369 lb-ft; seven-speed automatic; 3.5-liter V-6, 302 hp, 273 lb-ft; 3.5-liter V-6 with electric motor, 329 hp, 457 lb-ft; 5.5-liter turbocharged V-8, 402 hp, 443 lb-ft; 5.5-liter turbocharged V-8, 550 or 577 hp, 531 or 590 lb-ft; seven-speed automatic, RWD or AWD

EPA Fuel Economy (city/hwy): 15?24/23?32 (est.)

What's New: While the E-Class wears reshaped sheetmetal and the choice of two ?faces??Luxury or the more aggressive Sport?the most notable additions to the tried-and-true Benz sedan are advanced safety features that will eventually find their way to the upcoming S-Class, including Active Lanekeeping Assist, a cross-traffic sensor with brake boosting, and Distronic Plus With Steering Assist, which semiautonomously follows traffic ahead. While the new E250 BlueTEC will be equipped with a downsized 2.1-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel, the top-tier E63 AMG model gets a power boost and gains 4Matic. That will make the hairy-chested hot rod Mercedes-Benz's first AMG sedan with all-wheel drive.

The 2014 model takes yet another step away from the E-Class's old reputation for lazy steering and sluggish throttle response. Chassis dynamics depend on whether you opt for the standard Luxury version or the livelier Sport, which tightens up the suspension damping and quickens the steering ratio. When the V-8-powered E550 is replaced by the E400 in fall 2014, the next best thing to the top dog E63 AMG model will be powered by a twin-turbocharged V-6 that produces 333 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque.

Tech Tidbit: Mercedes-Benz once debuted techy features on their top-tier cars before those features trickled down to the rest. But among the midlevel E-Class's new suite of electronics systems is a steer-by-wire feature that uses stereoscopic cameras to actively position the car in the center of the lane.

Driving Character: Our afternoon spent traversing the Spanish countryside in the E400 revealed satisfyingly robust performance, with smooth but strong acceleration and capable handling. But it was the following day?spent piloting the 577-hp E63 AMG 4Matic S-Model through the limestone spires of Montserrat?that offered an otherworldly experience that defies what you'd expect from a 2-ton sedan. Roaring and fast, yet surprisingly sure-footed thanks to a new all-wheel-drive system that diverts 67 percent of power to the rear wheels, this four-door has claimed a 0-to-60-mph time of 3.5 seconds that nudges it into supercar territory, all wrapped in a stealthy package befitting a businessman's commuting car.

Our brain might say E400, but our heart screams for the E63 AMG 4Matic. Our wallet, however, prefers the E400 Hybrid or E250 BlueTEC.

Favorite Detail: As much as we appreciate the E-Class's new safety features and its departure from staid styling, the intangibles such as its general impression of solidity and the vault-like seal of its door impress the most. Among a sea of more hastily assembled cars, the E-Class stands out as a well-bolted-together sedan that feels like it will stand the test of time.

Driver's Grievance: It's sportier than ever, but the E-Class still comes across as a bit stodgy because of Mercedes-Benz conventions such as the steering-column-mounted shift stalk and the door-mounted seat adjustments.

Bottom Line: The E-Class has always been a crucial car for Mercedes-Benz, and this latest iteration extends the model's traditional values in a more modern package. For 2014 Mercedes-Benz managed to modernize the E-Class without wrecking the winning formula.

3-D printing using old milk jugs

Mar. 1, 2013 ? Suppose you could replace "Made in China" with "Made in my garage." Suppose also that every time you polished off a jug of two percent, you would be stocking up on raw material to make anything from a cell phone case and golf tees to a toy castle and a garlic press.

And, you could give yourself a gold medal for being a bona fide, recycling, polar-bear-saving rock star.

Michigan Technological University's Joshua Pearce is working on it. His main tool is open-source 3D printing, which he uses to save thousands of dollars by making everything from his lab equipment to his safety razor.

Using free software downloaded from sites like Thingiverse, which now holds over 54,000 open-source designs, 3D printers make all manner of objects by laying down thin layers of plastic in a specific pattern. While high-end printers can cost many thousands of dollars, simpler open-source units run between $250 and $500 -- and can be used to make parts for other 3D printers, driving the cost down ever further.

"One impediment to even more widespread use has been the cost of filament," says Pearce, an associate professor of materials science and engineering and electrical and computer engineering. Though vastly less expensive than most manufactured products, the plastic filament that 3D printers transform into useful objects isn't free.

Milk jugs, on the other hand, are a costly nuisance, either to recycle or to bury in a landfill. But if you could turn them into plastic filament, Pearce reasoned, you could solve the disposal problem and drive down the cost of 3D printing even more.

So Pearce and his research group decided to make their own recycling unit, or RecycleBot. They cut the labels off milk jugs, washed the plastic, and shredded it. Then they ran it through a homemade device that melts and extrudes it into a long, spaghetti-like string of plastic. Their process is open-source and free for everyone to make and use at Thingiverse.com.

The process isn't perfect. Milk jugs are made of high-density polyethylene, or HDPE, which is not ideal for 3D printing. "HDPE is a little more challenging to print with," Pearce says. But the disadvantages are not overwhelming. His group made its own climate-controlled chamber using a dorm-room refrigerator and an off-the-shelf teddy-bear humidifier and had good results. With more experimentation, the results would be even better, he says. "3D printing is where computers were in the 1970s."

The group determined that making their own filament in an insulated RecycleBot used about 1/10th the energy needed to acquire commercial 3D filament. They also calculated that they used less energy than it would take to recycle milk jugs conventionally.

RecycleBots and 3D printers have all kinds of applications, but they would be especially useful in areas where shopping malls are few and far between, Pearce believes. "Three billion people live in rural areas that have lots of plastic junk," he says. "They could use it to make useful consumer goods for themselves. Or imagine people living by a landfill in Brazil, recycling plastic and making useful products or even just 'fair trade filament' to sell. Twenty milk jugs gets you about 1 kilogram of plastic filament, which currently costs $30 to $50 online."

Pearce's research is described in depth in two articles: "Distributed Recycling of Waste Polymer into RepRap Feedstock,"coauthored with Christian Baechler and Matthew DeVuono of Queen's University and published in the March issue of Rapid Prototyping ; and "Distributed Recycling of Post-Consumer Plastic Waste in Rural Areas," coauthored by Michigan Tech's Jerry Anzalone (CEE) and students Megan Kreiger (MSE), Meredith Mulder (MSE) and Alexandra Glover (MSE), which will appear in the Proceedings of the Materials Research Society.

Hyper-Productivity Could Be Holding You Back - Business Insider

"I believe this is a very special moment in history, a kind of perfect storm. There is a growing recognition ? to borrow language from AA ? that our world has become unmanageable." Those words have been reverberating in my head ever since Arianna Huffington, founder of the Huffington Post, said them over the weekend during the?Wisdom 2.0?conference in San Francisco. She was?introducing?an iPhone app called "GPS for the Soul," which is designed to measure heart rate variability as a window into your stress level at any given moment during the day.

It seemed fitting to me that Arianna described the challenges so many of us face in our work ? and in our lives more broadly ? by using the language of addiction. Her words rang especially true because I happen in the midst of reading a book by Bryan Robinson titled "Chained to the Desk: A Guidebook for Workaholics."

The addiction of our times is digital connection, instant gratification, and the cheap adrenalin high of constant busyness. The heartening news is that more and more leaders in big companies are beginning to recognize the insidious costs of moving so relentlessly and at such high speeds.

Wisdom 2.0 focused on technology ? a primary driver of the increasing unmanageability of our lives. The conference was launched three years ago as a meeting between people from the meditation community and the tech world in Silicon Valley to discuss how to use technology more wisely.

Paradoxically, the most important solution I heard is to use technology less frequently, and more intentionally. Or, as?Sherry Turkle, a professor at MIT, put it in her talk: "There need to be places in our lives and in our organizations that are device-free zones."

Just below the surface of our shared compulsion to do ever more, ever faster, is a deep hunger to do less, more slowly. I saw proof of that a couple of weeks ago, when I wrote an article for?The New York Times?titled "Relax! You'll Be More Productive." It focused on the growing scientific evidence that when we build in more time for sleep, naps, breaks, and vacations, we become not just healthier and happier, but also more productive. The piece prompted an avalanche of response, much of it poignantly describing the sense of overwhelm people are feeling at work.

The search to find ways to deal with these issues was evident at Wisdom 2.0.?Padmasree Warrior, the chief technology and strategy officer at Cisco, described in compelling detail the behaviors she's built into her life to take her out of rapid-fire analytical, "doing" mode. She meditates for 20 minutes every day. On the weekends, she paints and takes photographs. Even when she?tweets, she often does so in haikus ? as a way to put herself in a more creative mode.

Jeff Weiner, the CEO of LinkedIn,?talked about how compassion has become a centerpiece of his management style. More specifically, he described how compassion requires slowing down and taking the time to truly listen to others. It means understanding where they're coming from, caring about the struggles they're facing, and the baggage they're carrying.

Bill Ford, the executive chairman of Ford Motor Company, talked about the harrowing experience he went through when Ford nearly declared bankruptcy several years ago. Taking time to meditate each day was critical. "The practice of mindfulness kept me going during the darkest days," he said. He also took time each morning to "set an intention" to deal with whatever arose that day with a sense of compassion and kindness.

In my own life, I've found that both my productivity and my sense of well-being depend more than ever on building more time into the day to renew, reflect, and connect with others. Two such experiences at Wisdom 2.0 had to do with taking time to get away from the activity of the conference itself. The first was wandering over to a chill out room sponsored by Google, lying down on a mat next to several others doing the same thing, and taking a nap. When I got up 45 minutes later, I felt refreshed and able to fully reengage in the conference.

My second revelatory experience was a lunch I shared with two new friends who were also attending the conference. We ended up spending more than two hours together, free of digital interruptions, just talking, reflecting, laughing, and hanging out. How often do most of us take the time to truly connect with work colleagues ? much less friends ? and how much richer are we for it when we do return to our work?

Speed, distraction, and instant gratification are the enemies of nearly everything that matters most in our lives. Creating long-term value ? for ourselves and for others ? requires more authentic connection, reflection, and the courage to delay immediate gratification. That's wisdom in action.

Numerology Compatibility Chart : Some Interesting Facts You Might ...

Numerology compatibility charts have become immensely popular these days. Most of us are in quest of numerological compatibility results before striking any form of alliance. The cardinal rule here always is that such predictions and charts must always be sources from trusted counters. Before looking out for compatibility charts, predictions, or horoscopes for today, make sure the source is credible. Look for reputation checks, referrals, and whatever else it takes in order to be completely sure. Some interesting facts about numerology compatibility have been listed here for better insight into the concept.

Numerology Compatibility Chart: Interesting Insights for a Better Understanding

"Compatibility for Aspects of Self: The name number and the number of the birth date are considered to be most important factors in the numerology chart. When the name and date of birth are compatible or more compatible than necessary, the person is destined to lead to a boring, uneventful life. It also means that the person will not have the opportunity of learning too many lessons in life. But when both these numbers aren"t compatible with each other, the life experiences are likely to be eventful.
"Compatibility of Business Partners: With respect to business partners, it would always be essential to choose ones with compatible numbers with yours. If the numbers appear more compatible than required, both partners could have the same level of introspection which could be harmful for the business in the long run. For instance, both partners may not be able to notice certain things which may be crucial for long term success in business. So, marginal incompatibility is likely to be the best choice.
"Compatibility of Friends: Friends with compatible numerology charts are likely to stick through for the rest of their lives. The same is the case for married couples who also need to be the best of friends. In marital relationshios, personal issues are prime and there could be issues concerning societal expectations, parents, family traditions, and so on. Although numerology charts do not take these aspects into consideration, compatible partners are likely to stick through thick and thin. Basically, compatible people need minimal effort to align themselves according to the likes and preferences of each other. And, a relationship that requires minimal efforts for adjustments is always likely to be less stressful.

A numerology compatible chart is therefore very essential. Make sure you get one for assured success in life.

US: $60 million in new aid to Syria opposition

ROME (AP) ? The Obama administration said Thursday that it will provide the Syrian opposition with an additional $60 million in assistance and ? in a significant policy shift ? will for the first time provide nonlethal aid like food and medical supplies to rebels battling to oust President Bashar Assad.

"We need to stand on the side of those who want to see a free Syria," U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said. "The stakes are really high and we can't risk letting this country in the heart of the Mideast being destroyed by vicious autocrats."

Kerry announced the new support and the decision to back the rebel fighters on the sidelines of an international conference on Syria in Rome, where European and Arab nations also signaled their intention to provide fresh assistance to the opposition.

"No nation, no people should live in fear of their so-called leaders," Kerry said.

Mouaz al-Khatib, leader of the Syrian opposition coalition, called on Assad to "for once in your life behave as a human being."

"Bashar Assad, you have to make at least one wise decision in your life for the future of your country," al-Khatib said.

Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi, who hosted the meeting, said: "We must go above and beyond the efforts we are making now. We can no longer allow this massacre to continue."

Terzi issued a statement earlier Thursday saying the foreign ministers recognized "the need to change the balance of power on the ground." He said the countries "will coordinate their efforts closely so as to best empower the Syrian people and support the Supreme Military Command of the Free Syrian Army in its efforts to help them exercise self-defense."

Kerry said the U.S. decision is designed to increase the pressure on Assad to step down and pave the way for a democratic transition. The aid is also intended to help the opposition govern newly liberated areas of Syria and blunt the influence of extremists.

"For more than a year, the United States and our partners have called on Assad to heed the voice of the Syrian people and to halt his war machine," Kerry said. "Instead, what we have seen is his brutality increase."

He added, "The United States' decision to take further steps now is the result of the brutality of superior armed force propped up by foreign fighters from Iran and Hezbollah."

Washington has already provided $385 million in humanitarian aid to Syria's war-weary population and $54 million in communications equipment, medical supplies and other nonlethal assistance to Syria's political opposition. The U.S. also has screened rebel groups for Turkey and American allies in the Arab world that have armed rebel fighters.

But until now, no U.S. dollars or provisions have gone directly to rebel fighters, reflecting concerns about forces that have allied themselves with more radical Islamic elements since Assad's initial crackdown on peaceful protesters in March 2011.

"Given the stakes, the president will now extend food and medical supplies to the Syrian opposition, including the Supreme Military Council," Kerry said Thursday.

The $60 million will go to Assad's political opposition. U.S. officials said the rations and medical supplies will be delivered to the rebels through their military council, and is to be distributed only to carefully vetted members of the Free Syrian Army.

Kerry was asked if the U.S. contribution was enough to tilt the conflict the rebels' way. "We're doing this but other countries are doing other things," he replied, without going into specifics. "I am confident the totality of this effort is going to have an impact on the ability of the Syrian opposition to accomplish its goals."

The U.S. will be sending technical advisers to the Syrian National Coalition offices in Cairo to oversee and help them spend the money for good governance and rule of law. The advisers will be from non-governmental organizations and other groups that do this kind of work.

The foreign ministers' presentation was disrupted by one protester who called on them to "stop supporting terrorists."
