PFT: Cromartie now voice of fiscal responsibility

Apparently, there?s no such thing as bad publicity for Jay-Z?s latest venture.

With his new firm creating headlines (and controversy) via the addition of Giants receiver Victor Cruz and Jets quarterback Geno Smith, Jay-Z?s Roc Nation Sports could be sliding down I-95 and adding Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson.

According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Jackson has terminated his relationship with agent Drew Rosenhaus and could sign with Jay-Z?s firm.

Mike Garafolo of USA Today takes it a step farther, turning ?could? into ?would like to.?

Jackson?s desire to launch a music career has attracted him to Jay-Z.? ?That culture for hip-hop was huge, and I had a passion for it at an early age,? Jackson told Yahoo! Sports last year.? ?I have a slim chance of making it in the music industry.? It?s a risk, [and there are] no guarantees.? But I?m a firm believer in having one life, and living that one life up.?

Per NFLPA rules, a five-day waiting period must expire before Jackson signs with a new agent.? In the interim, Rosenhaus could try to persuade Jackson to change his mind.

If the termination sticks, the biggest question becomes whether Jackson would hire Roc Nation Sports for marketing and football representation (like Smith did) or whether Jay-Z will handle off-field interests and Jackson will hire CAA to deal with his NFL contract (like Cruz did).? With the NFLPA currently investigating whether and to what extent Jay-Z helped persuade Smith to sign with Jay-Z?s in-house NFLPA-certified agent, Kim Miale, in violation of NFLPA rules, Jay-Z needs to tread lightly.

Or maybe he doesn?t.? Maybe Jackson already has been recruited via the media?s coverage of the Smith recruitment.? Maybe Jackson needs only to call Miale and say, ?I want to hire you to handle my football contract.?? If so, there will be no way to prove that Jay-Z recruited Jackson to sign with Miale.

If that?s what happen, the NFLPA will have no choice but to take a step back from its current rule and ask itself why that rule is in place, and whether and to what extent the rule should be changed to address situations like this.? Jay-Z isn?t a runner in the classic sense; he owns an agency.? CAA is owned by non-certified NFLPA agents, too.? So are other firms.

In the end, perhaps the NFLPA should broaden the lens and consider clarifying or revising its rules when the recruiter isn?t working for the certified agent, but the certified agent is working for the recruiter.

The After Math: Internet trends, Apple TVs and Samsung's Finnish triumph

Welcome to The After Math, where we attempt to summarize this week's tech news through numbers, decimal places and percentages.

The After Math Internet trends, Apple TVs and Samsungs Finnish triumph

The launch of the Xbox One may be behind us, but we still have plenty of numbers to crunch. Speaking of ones, this week we saw a record-setting auction for an old Apple 1, a multi-tabbed refresh of our inbox and the release of Mary Meeker's annual Internet Trends Report. Add to that some big names taking the stage at D11, an anti-graffiti drone and a rather bizarre-looking harp, and you have this week's After Math. Join us after the break for the digits.

Serena Williams beats Vinci in 4th round at French

PARIS (AP) ? Serena Williams earned a berth in the French Open quarterfinals and extended her career-best winning streak to 28 matches by beating Roberta Vinci 6-1, 6-3 on Sunday.

Williams had her toughest test yet this week but swept the last 10 points and has lost only 10 games in four rounds.

The 15-time Grand Slam champion next plays 2009 winner Svetlana Kuznetsova. With a victory, Williams would earn her first berth in a French Open semifinal since 2003.

She won her lone Roland Garros title in 2002.

Williams improved to 20-0 this year on clay. Since losing in the first round a year ago at Roland Garros, Williams is 71-3, including titles at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, the London Olympics and the season-ending WTA Championships.

She first reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros in 2001, when she was 19. Now she's 31 and the oldest player in the top 20.

The other remaining U.S. women play Monday. Four Americans reached the fourth round, the most at Roland Garros since 2004.

In men's play, David Ferrer reached the quarterfinals for the sixth Grand Slam in a row by beating Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-1, 6-1.

Kuznetsova, ranked 39th and unseeded, beat No. 8 Angelique Kerber 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. The Russian has reached the final eight in back-to-back major tournaments for the first time since 2009, when she won the title at Roland Garros.

She reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in January before losing to eventual champion Victoria Azarenka.

Kuznetsova whacked a forehand winner on match point, then let out a jubilant scream. The two-time major champion improved to 12-2 this year in three-set matches, and her winning percentage of .820 (41-9) at Roland Garros is the best among active players.

Ferrer, seeded No. 4, converted 6 of 17 break-point chances against Anderson. Ferrer held every service game and committed only 11 unforced errors to 41 for the South African, seeded No. 23.

When the Spaniard closed out the victory, he looked to the blue sky and raised both fists. His next opponent will be the winner of the match between two fellow Spaniards, No. 11 Nicolas Almagro and No. 32 Tommy Robredo.

Ferrer has won four matches without dropping a set. He's a four-time major semifinalist, including at Roland Garros last year.

How Samsung Got Big

samsungThe cellphones were stacked up high in the Gumi factory yard and more were coming out every minute. Phones, TVs, fax machines, and other gear shattered as it hit the concrete and Samsung CEO Kun-hee Lee and his board cracked the screens and cases with heavy hammers. Then they lit a bonfire and threw everything in.

?Knaidel? for the win (mazol tov!)

Is this a knaidel? (William Holt/Yahoo News)After three near-victories over the past four years, Arvind V. Mahankali won the 86th Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday. The word he spelled correctly to take the title: ?knaidel.?

Knaidel?

The unusual word, thanks to its prominent role in the nationwide competition?which this year hosted 281 contestants in National Harbor, Md.?instantly rose to the esteemed ranks of other head-scratchers, including ?guetapens? and ?cymotrichous,? the previous two words to catapult contestants to fame. But what, exactly, does "knaidel" mean? And could it also be spelled ?kneidel?? Or is it ?kneydl??

According to the bee?s official pronouncer, Jacques Bailly, a knaidel is ?a small mass of leavened dough cooked by boiling water or steaming as with soup.? It has its word origin in German-derived Yiddish.

Well, that didn?t do it for us. Frankly, we still had plenty of questions.

So, Yahoo News took to the streets of New York City to visit some of its many Yiddish food shops and eateries to see if we could shed some light on the matter. At the very least, we wanted to see a knaidel in person.

?Are you looking for needles?? asked the cook at the Garment District?s Mr. Broadway Kosher Restaurant. ?I think you?re in the wrong place.?

At B&H Vegetarian Restaurant, an East Village mecca for Yiddish comfort food, the entire staff was similarly perplexed by our question, ?What is a knaidel?? One server, named Alexandra, asked us to spell the word for her.

?K-n-a-i-d-e-l.?

?No idea,? Alexandra said. ?Maybe that?s Ukrainian,? she offered regarding the word?s etymology. ?Try Brooklyn?Williamsburg or Greenpoint.?

After being told of Mahankali?s crushing victory in the spelling bee and the word?s newfound significance, Alexandra shrugged. ?Good for him, I guess.?

Maybe Alexandra was right, though, and one of Brooklyn?s many Yiddish-speaking communities would have the answer.

According to the good folks at Yelp, South Williamsburg?s Hatzlacha Supermarket would be among the likeliest places to find out. Hatzlacha is a kosher grocery store serving mostly Yiddish-speaking customers, stocked with everything from a fish market and deli to a sizable selection of Jewish CDs. If they didn?t know, who would?

?Can you spell it?? asked one Hatzlacha employee, a woman in her 20s.

?K-n-a-i-d-e-l.?

?It?s a matzo ball,? she said. ?Matzo crumbs, eggs, seltzer, water?it?s just a matzo ball.?

?Like a matzo ball, or is a matzo ball??

?It?s a matzo ball.?

So the knaidel was just a matzo ball! And what of its sudden fame? Maybe this word would take the world by storm, and delis and Passover Seders everywhere would now serve knaidel, not matzo, soup.

Yahoo News checked in with Peter Shelsky of Shelsky?s Smoked Fish in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Carroll Gardens?whose food is an updated version of traditional smoked fish and appetizers?to get the expert opinion of someone at the cutting edge of New York?s modern Jewish food scene.

When asked about the food's winning role in the spelling bee, Shelsky said he views the knaidel?s rise to prominence as positive.

?Anything that brings attention to the new Jewish food renaissance is fantastic,? he said, adding that he can?t recall when he last used the word.

?I can?t remember the last time I wrote down ?knaidel,?? Shelsky said. Nor could he be sure of how to spell it. ?It?s one of those things like ?Chanukah.? There are probably five ways to spell ?Chanukah,? and I never stick to one of them.?

There are almost as many ways to spell ?knaidel? (variations include "kneidel," "kneydl" and "knaydl"). But the Scripps National Spelling Bee recognizes only one, which Mahankali apparently knew as well as his penultimate word??tokonoma.?

Liberty Reserve's money laundering spotted in 2009

(AP) ? Costa Rican officials say the currency transfer firm Liberty Reserve first raised red flags in the Central American country in 2009 when authorities detected money laundering activities.

Anti-drug Institute Deputy Director Bernardita Marin says bank officials reported suspicious activities in 2009 and in 2010 to the government's Financial Intelligence Unit, which began investigating.

The investigation was turned over to prosecutors in 2011, the same year the United States informed Costa Rica about Liberty Reserve's criminal activities.

Marin says that Liberty Reserve moved about $100 million through Costa Rican banks.

Liberty Reserve's founder Arthur Budovsky was arrested Friday at a Madrid airport while trying to return home to Costa Rica.

U.S. federal prosecutors charged seven people Tuesday, including Budvosky, with running an underworld bank that handled $6 billion around the world.
