At New Orleans comic event, mere humans become heroes (Reuters)

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) ? Vampires drenched in fake blood mingled with sword-toting ninjas. Martian manhunters rubbed elbows with Batman and Wonder Woman.

For the thousands of comic-culture fans who circulated around acres of exhibits at the New Orleans Comic conference on Saturday, the event was a chance to meet, or temporarily become, a hero.

"When I walk out in regular clothes, no one pays any mind," said attendee Jeff Kent, who was dressed in the gleaming white, robot-like garb of a "Star Wars" storm trooper. "But when I put this on, all of a sudden I'm a rock star."

The event, one of several staged around the country by comic book and digital publisher Wizard World, continued on Sunday.

Celebrities on hand to meet fans included actors William Shatner ("Star Trek"), Adam Baldwin ("Full Metal Jacket"), Mary McDonnell ("Battlestar Gallactica"), James Marsters ("Buffy: The Vampire Slayer") and Lou Ferrigno (Incredible Hulk"), along with

legendary comic book creator Stan Lee and a host of comic artists.

Cartoonist and comic book creator Larry Marder, who has published his "Tales of the Beanworld" comics for almost 40 years, told Reuters that at one time the primary focus of these conventions were the comic books and novels that shaped this peculiar segment of American culture.

"It used to be that the stories came first, and people read their monthly comics and were loyal to them," he said. But over the years, characters like Superman, Batman and Spiderman became brands that reached far beyond their book origins.

"It's almost as if the characters were real and they had agents who exploited their likenesses across many platforms - like movies, games, TV shows and breakfast cereal," he said.

Marder said that the launch of "Star Wars" by movie producer George Lucas set the stage for a merchandising industry that widened into toys, video games and action figures. The expansion of the industry made a host of characters into household names, and turned fictional heroes into megapersonalities.

"Superheroes are essentially power fantasies, and the superhero fan has become the backbone of our industry," Marder said.

Fans such as Chris Labrad support that theory. The Jackson, Mississippi, resident came to the comic conference with fellow members of the Mississippi Mandalorians, a "Star Wars" club he joined four years ago.

"I always saw those characters on television and thought, 'I wish I could meet those guys,'" he said.

Costumed as a S.H.I.E.L.D Sniper from Marvel Comics' Avenger Universe at the convention, Labrad said he is also a devoted "Star Wars" fan and has three different Jedi costumes, including Luke Skywalker.

"Events like this give us an excuse to dress up and be these people for a while," he said.

Many of the fan groups build their activities around charitable causes, with members donning their costumes for fund-raising events.

The man best known for his 1960s television portrayal of a 23rd-century starship commander has a theory about why certain types of people flock to events such as the New Orleans event.

"It's part of our need for heroes," Shatner told fans who had jammed into a meeting room for a question-and-answer session with the star of the original "Star Trek" television series and movies. "This is our participation in the mythology of 'Star Trek.'"

While "Star Trek" and subsequent movie series "Star Wars" were among the older cultural phenomena represented at the convention, their still-strong fan base made Shatner a big draw.

"Star Trek" devotees will never forget the actor's portrayal of the morally grounded commander of the Starship Enterprise, Captain James T. Kirk. Shatner purports to be sick of his decades-long association with Kirk, but he clearly enjoys having fun with it.

"Do you boldly go where no man has gone before?" a fan asked him, hearkening to the mission of the Starship Enterprise.

"It depends on the girl," the 80-year-old Shatner quipped.

(AP) ? How does a man move on with his life after losing his wife and daughters to two ruthless home invaders who tormented, then killed them?

For more than four years, a nation both disgusted and captivated by a chilling crime in prototypical suburbia has wondered that. Only one man ? Dr. William Petit, the sole survivor ? can provide the answer.

On Friday, with the second killer sentenced to death and the book closed after two long, graphic trials, Petit gave a clue as to how he copes with pain he has been forced to revisit continually in court.

"My only hope is for justice to be served and to do my best to honor the lives of my family, who should all still be here to share their gifts and love with the world," Petit said Friday right before a judge sentenced Joshua Komisarjevsky, 31, to death.

"I hope to continue to honor my family," said Petit, who survived being beaten with a baseball bat and tied up. "I push forward in the hope that good will overcome evil, and feel the need to tell the world that evil lives among us and we need to rid the world of it."

The gruesome crime evoked comparisons to Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood," about the brutal murders of a Kansas farmer and his family.

Komisarjevsky admitted in an audiotaped confession played for the jury in his trial late last year that he spotted Petit's wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, and their 11-year-old daughter, Michaela, at a supermarket and followed them to their house in Cheshire, a suburb of New Haven.

After going home and putting his own daughter to bed, he and Steven Hayes, now 48, returned to the Petit house in the middle of the night, while the family was sleeping, to rob it.

Dr. Petit was beaten, tied up and taken to the basement. Michaela and Hayley, 17, were tied to their beds. In the morning, Hayes took Jennifer to the bank to withdraw money, while Komisarjevsky stayed at the house.

It's believed that's when he sexually assaulted Michaela, the 11-year-old. Hayes was convicted of sexually assaulting the mother.

After Hayes arrived back at the house with the girls' mother, she was strangled. The pair doused the house and beds with gasoline, set it ablaze and left. The sisters, bound helplessly while flames and fumes rose around them, died of smoke inhalation.

Dr. Petit managed to escape the basement and hop, roll and crawl across a yard to a neighbor's house for help ? too late to save his family.

"July 23, 2007, was our personal holocaust," Petit said Friday. "A holocaust caused by two who are completely evil and actually do not comprehend what they have done."

Petit called his wife a friend, confidant and wonderful mother. He noted that Hayley would be in medical school by now and that Michaela loved to cook and sing.

"I lost my family and my home," he said. "They were three special people. Your children are your jewels."

Petit said he has difficulty sleeping and trusting. Family gatherings are subdued, he said, with no one quite sure what to do or say.

Jennifer's sister, Cynthia Hawke-Renn, said via a video played in court that everyday items like gas, rope and bedposts conjure horrific memories.

"There is no escaping the horrors of that night," she said.

Petit's father, William Petit Sr., said his son is not the same person now as he was in the days when he was a happy husband and father.

"Not only did we lose Jennifer, Hayley and Michaela, we have lost the Bill that we knew, and it is heartbreaking daily to watch him," Petit said. "He puts on a brave face and tries to hide his anguish and despair by working hard."

Petit has found what he calls occasional moments of peace, dedicating himself to a charity named for his family that raises money for education, the chronically ill and those affected by violence; and by campaigning for tougher laws, including the death penalty.

He has admitted he contemplated suicide many times. But this month he became engaged to a woman who volunteered at foundation events.

Petit has maintained his composure in court through three trials, even as the defense referred to him and his family as the "Petit posse."

Komisarjevsky's lawyers had worked to spare him the death penalty by describing sexual abuse their client endured as a child. The jury and the judge ? who had been subjected to grim evidence including pictures of charred beds, rope used to tie up the family and autopsy photos ? were unmoved.

The crime led to the defeat of a bill to outlaw the death penalty in Connecticut and sparked tougher state laws for repeat offenders and home invasions.

"This is a terrible sentence, but it is in truth a sentence you wrote for yourself with deeds of unimaginable horror and savagery on July 23, 2007," Judge Jon Blue said.

Komisarjevsky conveyed a mixture of regret and insistence in court Friday, saying that he didn't intend for anyone to die, that he didn't rape Michaela and that he didn't start the fire.

"I wonder when the killing will end," he said of his death sentence.

He described regrets and the devastating consequences of his decisions ? but blamed Hayes for the killings.

"I know my responsibilities, but what I cannot do is carry the responsibilities of the actions of another," Komisarjevsky said. "I did not want those innocent women to die."

The state's last execution in 2005 was the first since 1960, and Komisarjevsky and Hayes will likely spend years, if not decades, in prison.

William Petit and his relatives left the courtroom before Komisarjevsky spoke. The killer noted that "forgiveness is not mine to have" but said it wasn't the forgiveness of the victims' relatives he needed to find.

"I have to learn how to forgive my worst enemy ? myself," he said.

Petit's sister, Hannah Chapman, said Komisarjevsky tried to blame others when he planned and carried out the crime, escalating it by attacking her brother and molesting her niece.

"Either way, he will be damned to hell for what he did," she said, "and that is where he belongs."

I think so.

And minor nitpick, 42 is XLII, not XVII.

Certainly possible, especially if he continues on to have several more good regular seasons.

It's funny, before the season started I was saying Cruz was going to pass Manningham on the depth chart and be a solid #2. He just needed to learn the playbook better and get some chemistry with Eli. Never in my wildest dreams did I think he would do this though.

Nicks and Cruz have been very dependable. They make the big gain circus catch plays, but they also make the short yardage, drive extending third down catches, and that's important.

Idea for a Super Bowl drinking game:
One shot for every time Michaels or Collinsworth says "elite".
One shot for every time Michaels or Collinsworth mentions Super Bowl XLII.

We'd all be dead by the five minute mark of the first quarter.

GMEN!

Hopefully Eli becomes the last Manning to ever win a game in Indy

Ready for same Brady beatdown v2.0. Neither team is better than they were in 2007 but Giants D-line is pretty close to edging out 07's IMO. Strahan, Tuck, Osi vs. Tuck, Osi, JPP?

It worked four years ago and its gonna work again!!

2 in 4! LETS GO!

For the 30 losers that aren't headed to the Super Bowl, what are some things on your offseason wish lists for your teams?

Broncos

In the draft, we need to add a penetrating interior lineman. Guys like Still from Penn State and Worthy from Michigan State should be on the board at pick #25. We also need a talented safety valve at tight end. Dwayne Allen from Clemson is arguably the best TE in this class, and should be there at 25 as well. Eddie Konz should be a dominant center in this league for years to come, and although we just recently drafted JD Walton, if you have the opportunity to significantly improve a position, you go for it. A guy like Kendall Wright at WR, David Wilson at RB, or Josh Norman at CB (fast riser at the Shrine Bowl) would be great second round picks.

As far as free agency, we need to try to add a backup QB that will challenge Tebow for playing time and therefore push him to get better. Not that Tebow won't try to improve, because he obviously will, but we need a viable option behind him in case he flops. Brady Quinn was not going to cut it this year. I'd like to see us add a veteran middle linebacker that can be a difference maker. Lofton will probably resign in Atlanta, but a guy that I'm banking we'll pursue is Dan Connor from Carolina. Fox drafted him, after all, and when Beason went down this year, he played very well. We could really use a veteran CB like Terrell Thomas (might want more money than the Giants are willing to give after the ACL injury), Brandon Carr, or Tracy Porter (nagged by injuries and fell victim to the emergence of Patrick Robinson). A dominant DE to play opposite Dumervil is probably a luxury at this point, given our other more gaping needs. Avril would be awesome, but he's in a great situation on that emerging D-line in Detroit and will probably re-up. If they don't see a DT prospect they like in the draft, then Jason Jones would be a terrific option. Probably the best available interior pass rusher this offseason. A one-cut running back like Ryan Grant or Michael Bush, along with McGahee, would give Fox the physical running game he's looking for.

The wish list is long, and we need to fill a lot of holes to compete. But a lot of these options are realistic, and I'm hoping Elway can have another solid draft and put together some quality free agents in this, his first normal offseason.

ESPN isn't even showing the Bradshaw "fumble". So much for it being a controversy this week.

I wasn't in here to see the reaction but I thought the forward progress ruling was accurate. Veron Davis did seem to step out of bounds well before the endzone for his 73 yard TD catch though.

The ball slightly touching the return man call was quite amazing though. I swore the refs were going to stay with the call on the field because even with the replays it was so close. Between that and the fumble in OT that return man should be on suicide watch. Poor guy, I hope he doesn't let it bother him long.

Krinkle, I like you dude, but you have to give it a rest. If the MVP was a "true value of a player to a team award", since Peyton Manning can't get it for being hurt (which honestly he should because holy crap is that team putrid without him), Eli Manning is the true MVP of the NFL this season.

This is his year. 5856 yards, 37 TDs - 17 INT. on a team that has a line that has shown up probably 1/3rd of the time, and can't run the ball to save their lives.

BG's post isn't even worth a comment. Beat a 15-1 team on the road, handily, obviously they had nothing to do with it. They're in the Super Bowl, and if he got his knee blown out in preseason they'd be lucky to be a 4 or 5 win team.

That being said, the 49ers D was pretty awesome today (see, BG, I give credit to the other team instead of saying the Giants line was the cause of the problem), and that was a sucky way for them to go out. I think we may have won eventually without it, barring a disasterous turnover, because Smith had a big time case of the yips from the end of the 4th on, but still...
